Dover's Children's Thrift edition is a decent, affordable on-ramp to Hugo for young readers, and the core themes of empathy and justice carry even in abbreviated form. The trade-off is real, though: Hugo's architectural richness and historical depth disappear in compression, and the tragic ending is preserved β which is the right artistic choice but one parents should prepare for. Worth it as a first taste of the classic, less so as a standalone reading experience.
