The Ice House

Monica Sherwood's debut manages something tricky — it takes climate anxiety, a parent's serious accident, and a grandmother's death and makes them feel real without crushing the reader under the weight of it. The snow fort at the center of the story is a smart, literal image for how kids actually cope. Middle-grade readers who came of age during pandemic lockdowns will recognize themselves here.
