Maryrose Wood's droll, self-aware narration is genuinely funny for both kids and the adults reading aloud with them — Penelope Lumley is a delight, and the wolf-raised children are a premise that somehow works. Faith-conscious families should know that later books in the series bring in séance and fortune-telling elements (played for comedy, but present), so a parental preview of later volumes is a reasonable step. Book one itself is clean, warm, and funny.
