Laura Numeroff knows exactly what she's doing with this age group, and this entry in the Jellybeans series delivers warm friendship messages, a genuine confidence-building arc, and some clever art-historical references (Degas, Rodin) that reward the adult reading it aloud as much as the child listening. It's the fourth book in the series rather than the first, so some freshness has worn off, but for a preschool or early-elementary read-aloud it's a solid pick.
