The medieval Inquisition-versus-science setting around Roger Bacon is genuinely underused in middle-grade fiction and the loyalty dilemma has real moral weight for the target age. But critics flagged thin characterization and historical inaccuracies significant enough to push it toward fantasy rather than historical fiction, and it is now out of print. For a classroom history project it is a reasonable choice; as a personal read there are better-executed options available.
