Billy Whitethorne's paintings alone justify a look — the desert landscapes are luminous and full of life, and the month-by-month structure gives children a rare window into an underrepresented culture and way of life. The text runs a bit long for the picture-book format and doesn't always explain the traditions it names, which limits how deeply young readers can engage. A visually stunning introductory book that works best with an adult who can fill in context.
