The Night Before Christmas

Clement Moore Β· 2019
73/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

Two centuries in, Moore's poem still does exactly what a great read-aloud should: the rhythm carries you, the images land, and children who have never met Saint Nicholas before feel the magic of the visit as if they were peeking through the window themselves. The eight named reindeer, the jolly round figure in red, the chimney entrance β€” this poem built the visual vocabulary the whole culture still uses for Santa Claus. Any illustrated 2019 edition brings new art to words that don't need improving. A note for faith-centered families: this is a secular Christmas poem β€” Santa and stockings, not the nativity. Nothing objectionable, but Christ-centered readers may prefer companion books for that dimension of the holiday. As a holiday read-aloud gift for children ages two through eight, it's essentially unbeatable. Worth It.
