A genuine classic that earns its place on every reading list — Hinton's raw, true-to-life look at class and belonging still lands hard, and Jim Fyfe's narration is praised for nailing the dialect divide between the Greasers and Socs. It does get intense (a killing, a fatal fire, underage drinking) so this is one to talk through with younger teens, but the narration alone makes it worth the listen.
