The Runaway Bunny

A little bunny announces he will run away — becoming a fish, a crocus, a rock, a bird — and his mother tells him quietly, warmly, that wherever he goes, she will follow. Margaret Wise Brown's 1942 text has been in continuous print for over 80 years because it does something elemental: it reassures a young child that parental love is unconditional and inexhaustible. Clement Hurd's illustrations alternate between black-and-white and vibrant full-color pages in a way that still feels beautiful. The honest caveats are minor: the text is extremely simple with limited literary complexity, and some modern readers in an analytical frame find the mother's relentless pursuit slightly over-protective. But those are adult readings of a book for toddlers. For ages 0–5 at bedtime, this is as close to a guaranteed keeper as picture books get. Worth It.
