Norah McClintock knows how to build a whodunit and her five Arthur Ellis Awards are well-earned, but this series opener follows a familiar formula without adding much that is new. It works perfectly well as classroom reading for middle-schoolers who enjoy Canadian mystery fiction, but it is not going to surprise or stay with readers the way the best YA mysteries do.
