The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Eric Carle's 1969 picture book may be the most efficiently brilliant early childhood book ever made. In fewer than 250 words and across its die-cut pages, a tiny caterpillar teaches counting, the days of the week, food names, and the life cycle of a butterfly — and makes all of it feel like pure joy rather than instruction. The tissue-paper collage art is instantly recognizable and genuinely beautiful. The honest caveat is simply that it's designed to be brief; there is no narrative arc to speak of, and older preschoolers may move through it in two minutes. That's a feature for toddlers and a mild limitation for fours and fives. For babies through age three, it's close to perfect.
