The West

Most Western civilization textbooks treat 'the West' as a fixed entity moving through time. Levack, Muir, and Veldman take a different approach: the West has always been defined and redefined through encounter — with Islamic civilization, the Americas, Asia, and Africa — and understanding those encounters is more illuminating than memorizing a march of kings. For undergraduates in a survey course, that framing gives them an analytical lens they can actually use. As a textbook it is necessarily more reference tool than narrative read, and the cultural-encounter emphasis means some traditional political history gets lighter treatment. Authored by respected scholars at research universities, it is a reliable and distinctive choice for the college classroom.
