A world history textbook written by a single scholar rather than a committee is genuinely unusual, and Spodek's sustained non-Eurocentric framing — giving real weight to Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East — is still ahead of many competitors. The annotated bibliographies are a standout feature that teach students how historians actually work. The 2009 edition is showing its age for post-2008 events, and the density will test introductory students, but as a coherent, intellectually honest survey this one holds up.
