Two Rainbows

Sophie Masson · 2018
68/100
👍 Worth It

Sophie Masson's picture book follows a girl who has moved from a wide-open farm to the city and mourns the colors she left behind — the orange sunrise traded for an orange peel in the gutter, violet twilight traded for neon signs. Working through the rainbow, she gradually discovers that color is everywhere, and the new place has its own beauty. It is quiet bibliotherapy done well: honest about grief without drowning in it, and gentle enough for ages three to seven. Kirkus called it lovely, and it earned a 2018 CBCA Notable Book recognition. The only caveat is that Michael McMahon's geometric digital illustrations give the human figures a somewhat stiff quality that not every child will warm to. For families navigating a big move, this one earns its shelf space.
