Jenn Bishop handles opioid addiction in a middle-grade frame the way it should be done — honestly but never gratuitously, and always through Emma's emotional experience rather than Austin's ordeal. The Junior Library Guild selection and Kirkus praise are earned: this does not preach, and Emma's arc as a developing artist gives the book a life beyond its issue hook. Parents should know the overdose is on the page, but the treatment is responsible and age-appropriate for the 10-and-up crowd.
