The orangutan-as-artist premise is genuinely funny and the ethical dilemma at the center gives it more substance than most early chapter books in its era. Out of print with no current critical record makes it hard to recommend over what is available today, but if a copy turns up at a library sale it would make a solid pick for a reluctant 8-year-old reader who needs a reason to laugh.
