The Wishbone Classics series did solid work introducing kids to literature they would otherwise skip, and this adaptation carries the spirit of Crane's original into middle-grade range. That said, the necessary compression strips most of what makes the source actually great, and the tie-in format means it reads as a bridge text rather than a standalone experience.
