Stearns knows how to write a big-picture survey that does not get lost in the weeds — patterns of change and continuity, migration, trade, comparative societies — and the compact format genuinely serves a college survey course. The 1999 edition is showing its age and later editions are the better choice, but the analytical approach itself is sound and the authorial authority is real. A useful text in the right edition.
